Best Start Kindergarten Assessment
The Best Start Assessment is a state-wide assessment that helps teachers identify the English literacy and numeracy skills of each student at the beginning of Kindergarten.
The Best Start Assessment is not a test but rather a supportive assessment designed to help teachers gain insights into each child's unique learning needs using engaging activities that allow children to demonstrate their skills in a comfortable and familiar setting.
It is a positive and constructive experience aimed at fostering a love for learning right from the start.

When to start school?
When to start your child at school is an individual decision. You may want to discuss this with us or with your child's pre-school teacher, carer or doctor. Key factors include:
- Age - children may be enrolled in Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn five years of age on or before the 31st of July in that year and all children must be enrolled by their sixth birthday
- Physical readiness
- Social and emotional readiness
- Children don't need to read and write before they start school
