Language study allows students to develop communication skills, learn about languages as systems and explore the relationship between language and culture. Students engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of societies and reflect on their understanding of social interactions.
Murray Farm Public School provides all students the opportunity to learn an addtional language.
The language taught at Murray Farm is Japanese.
The school offers two programs:
Japanese Bilingual Program
Students in this program receive 300 minutes of Japanese instruction per week and all instruction is communicated in Japanese, as per the NSW Bilingual Schools Program guidelines. For more details see the Japanese Biligual Program page.
Japanese Language other than English (LOTE) Program
Students in this program receive 40 minutes of Japanese and English instruction per week, during which time, students learn the Japanese language, about Japanese culture and cross-curricular concepts.
NSW Bilingual Schools Program
The NSW Bilingual Schools Program is an innovative strategy set to achieve a far greater levels of fluency in priority Asian languages among a cohort of students at four government primary schools.
Students learn the targeted Asian language from an early age through language immersion for up to one and a half hours every school day.
The program commenced in 2010 with Kindergarten and Year 1 classes and has expanded each year to include additional classes as the cohort progressed through the primary school pathway.
The four schools involved in the program and their targeted languages are:
• Rouse Hill Public School – Chinese (Mandarin)
• Scotts Head Public School - Indonesian
• Murray Farm Public School - Japanese
• Campsie Public School - Korean
The Program comprises both direct language teaching and language teaching integrated into selected Key Learning Areas, such as Human Society and its Environment, Health and Physical Education, Creative Arts and Science and Technology.
