When to start school?

When to start your child at school is an individual decision. You may want to discuss this with us or with your child's pre-school teacher, carer or doctor. The NSW Department of Education parent website contains some key points, including:

  • Age - children may be enrolled in Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn five years of age on or before the 31st of July in that year and all children must be enrolled by their sixth birthday
  • Physical readiness
  • Social and emotional readiness
  • Children don't need to read and write before they start school

Best Start

The Best Start Kindergarten Assessment is a state-wide assessment that helps teachers identify the English literacy and numeracy skills of each student at the beginning of Kindergarten.

What is the Best Start Kindergarten Assessment?

The Best Start Assessment is an important tool used in New South Wales to help educators understand each child's strengths and areas for development as they transition into formal schooling.

Conducted at the beginning of Kindergarten, this assessment focuses on key literacy and numeracy skills through engaging and age-appropriate activities. It provides valuable insights that inform teaching practices, ensuring that individual learning needs are met from the very start of a child's educational journey. The Best Start Assessment is designed to support children’s learning and development, enabling teachers to create a positive and tailored learning environment for every student.

The Best Start Assessment is not a test but rather a supportive assessment designed to help educators gain insights into each child's unique learning needs as they begin their journey in Kindergarten. Unlike traditional tests, which often place pressure on students, the Best Start Assessment uses engaging activities that allow children to demonstrate their skills in a comfortable and familiar setting.

The purpose of this assessment is to identify individual strengths and areas for growth, enabling teachers to tailor their instruction to better support each child's development. It is a positive and constructive experience aimed at fostering a love for learning right from the start.
