At Murray Farm Public School, we have an active Learning Support Team LST) to assist student’s learning needs. The team meet weekly to discuss, plan strategies and resources to support students who may require additional assistance. Murray Farm PS also offers the Minilit program, which is designed to support student to develop their reading skills. At MFPS this program is offered to a small number of Year 1 students. The students who are selected work with a trained Minilit teacher for an hour a day 4 days per week. The LST also assists in the transitioning of students from preschool to school and from primary school to high school.
Language Other Than English (LOTE)
The school offers students the opportunity to learn a second language through Languages-Other-Than-English (LOTE) programs. Currently, the school offers LOTE classes in Japanese for Kindergarten to Year 6.
In addition to this, as part of a pilot program exploring the benefits of Bilingual teaching, the school offers students in Kindergarten to Year 6 the opportunity to explore content in English and Japanese. Students in the Bilingual classes undertake various subjects across the curriculum in both languages, supported by the Japanese language teachers at the school.
English as an Additional Language or Dialect
English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) students are those whose first language is a language or dialect other than English and who require additional support to develop proficiency in Standard Australian English. The English as an additional language New Arrivals Program provides additional teaching support to schools enrolling eligible newly arrived students to support their transition to school in Australia.
The aim of the EAL/D teacher is to ensure the students access the curriculum and develop the academic English language proficiency required for success at school.
Gifted & Talented
Children from Year 1 to Year 6 are identified by a range of measures as having high potential for achievement in enrichment programs covering a range of disciplines.
The group meets once a week during class time where they are provided with opportunities to enrich their knowledge, understanding and competence where they have demonstrated ability and interest.
Information technology
Computer based technologies provide an invaluable educational resource to our children to improve their learning outcomes in all key learning areas.
From Kindergarten to Year 6, all students at Murray Farm participate in activities that assist in the development of their ability to:
- explore technological challenges to develop confidence;
- use computer based technologies to find, evaluate, store and retrieve information;
- communicate with others through technology.
